DM:  Welcome Justin, thanks for taking a moment to chat with LCI about Liberty Hangout and its two year anniversary.  Let's introduce you to the readers a little about your history and how you came about Liberty Hangout?

JM:  I grew up a right-wing conservative, and was very enamored by the leadership of George W. Bush when I was a child. As someone from the New York Metropolitan area, the tremors of 9/11 are still with me to this day, and I looked to the leadership of our President to help our nation stand strong. For a long time, I was an ardent supporter of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and was a proponent of the surveillance state. But I was young and naive, and after the re-election of President Obama in 2012, I began my journey into libertarian theory when I started reading books by Judge Andrew Napolitano. When I realized many of my former beliefs were either incorrect or not taken to their rational conclusions, my quench for truth only continued to grow. From there, I read the works of Ron Paul, Adam Kokesh, Murray Rothbard, Ludwig von Mises, Tom Woods, and Stefan Molyneux, and felt so transcended by my journey, that I wanted to share it with the world.


DM:  What was your biggest inspirations to start LH, which was formerly the Young Jeffersonians?

JM:  A lot of our recent followers don't know it, but the site was actually founded as YoungJeffersonians.com in February of 2015, before changing to Liberty Hangout in May of that year. I was inspired by our founding fathers to continue to promote their ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And my only goal when I started the site was for it to be my own personal website to share my political beliefs. If you would have told be back in 2015 that Liberty Hangout would have a following of close to 60,000 and one of the top Alexa ratings of all the competing libertarian websites just two years later, I would have thought you were crazy. I never intended for Liberty Hangout to grow into a brand, but people have enjoyed our unique content so much that it was inevitable.

DM:  What has helped evolve Liberty Hangout to what it is today?

JM:  Liberty Hangout really got a name for itself during the 2016 presidential election, when we were the first libertarian outlet to refuse to support the Johnson/Weld ticket. In many ways, we started the #NeverJohnson movement, and will likely always be remembered for this. While a lot of people were initially enraged by our hesitance towards the ticket, over time, it seems we now reflect the majority opinion in libertarian circles, and without our efforts, I think we might still have one too many libertarians running around saying that libertarianism is "fiscally conservative, socially liberal." And over the course of the 2016 election, we saw our following double as a result.


DM:  What's your favorite aspect of LH currently, and what do you hope to change in the upcoming future, if any changes or additions? 

JM:  My favorite aspect of Liberty Hangout is the strong fellowship we have amongst our staff. James, Chris, and Michael are my best friends, and we all confide in each other on a daily basis. Having a healthy relationship with your team members makes what you do that much more enjoyable.


DM:  What predictions does the crew at Liberty Hangout have for the future of the Libertarian Party later this year and going into next year?

JM:  After seeing the debacle that was the Johnson campaign, my expectations for the party are frankly bleak, to say the least. They decided they wanted to market mostly to Bernie Sanders supporters last year, and now that a Republican is back in office, it appears they still have the same intentions.

DM:  We have seen an influx (at least online through Facebook groups notably) what feels like a "left" or "SJW" major presence increase since the 2016 election. What is your group's ideas and theories as to how and why this has occurred? Do you expect this to be a trend to stay around for a while?

JM:   I believe this is largely due in part to a misrepresentation of libertarianism. So many advertise the philosophy as something that it's not, which causes moderates and low-tax liberals to believe that they're libertarians. I expect that either the word "libertarian" will lose its meaning, or those who know that libertarianism is a philosophy grounded on the idea of property rights and self-ownership will fight arduously to reclaim it.

DM:  What would be the Liberty Hangout's ideal candidate to run for the Libertarian Party during the 2020 or 2024 election? Should the Libertarian Party even consider a major 2020 Presidential run given the massive amount of support President Trump is getting from the "right?"

JM:   Given that the Libertarian Party realistically has no chance of winning a presidential election, they should focus on one thing and one thing only, and that is spreading the libertarian philosophy. They should nominate an effective messenger that knows how to market the philosophy well. If Trump's first term in office turns out to largely be a positive one, it will present the Libertarian Party with a challenge, since there will be a large block of libertarians who will want to help get Trump re-elected. Because of this, I foresee the party moving even further left in 2020 than they were in 2016.

 

DM:  We understand here at LCI that this work isn't easy, and it's very costly.  What can you tell readers about how to help keep LH going and what can they contribute? 

JM:  Since we are huge proponents of capitalism, if you're willing to contribute to us, we want to give you guys something great in return. In closing, if you could give one message to the entire Libertarian Party for them to hear, personally from you, what would that be?

JM: Please take some marketing courses to understand your target demographics. Not everyone is going to be receptive to the message of liberty, in the same way that not everyone is going to want to buy an iPhone. You need to know who is most likely to buy your product if you want to be successful.

DM:  Welcome back to the LCI Mr. Addis! After your hard work on your 2016 WA Lt. Governor run as a Libertarian, you are back in the fray running for local opening position in Kent, WA. What is the position you are running for and how many opponents do you expect to run against?
 

PA:  Thanks for having me back, David. And thanks for all your efforts at Liberty Chronicle, which gives a voice to those who are active in defending individual liberties around the country.

In 2017, I am running for a City Council seat in Kent, WA. Based on past races here I would expect no more than one or two other opponents, which will be a nice change from the 11-candidate race I was recently involved in for Lt. Governor. I’m looking forward to running to serve my local community, where I think the majority of the decision making belongs.

DM:  Going local will help you impact your community directly, right away.  What issues do you see in your city that you want to address?

PA:  Yes, I am very involved in my community already, working with charities & foundations. Being on the City Council is just one more way to serve my neighbors. Generally speaking, I see the role of City Council member as a steward, or watchdog, of the finances of the city. The revenues coming into the city belong to the people of Kent. Therefore it is a great responsibility to make sure the funds are spent on the things that help the people the most. Prioritizing spending, while minimizing the tax burden on the residents is an important balancing act. Kent is growing fast and there are many competing interests looking for an advantage within the myriad of current and future development projects. Making sure Kent has a balanced approach to growth, while addressing the concerns of all stakeholders is an important and complex task. I’m looking forward to that challenge, and my experience as a Project Manager at a Fortune 500 company overseeing multi-million dollar projects will certainly pay dividends in that role. I also believe that the entire process of local governance should be as transparent as possible. Technology can help with both transparency and accountability, and I hope we are able to utilize the best tools for that job in Kent.

I have recently been made aware of a couple of incidents in Kent where residents did not get a straight answer on issues related to public works. Both myself and my boss, who also lives in Kent, had difficulty finding resolution to a broken street light and a water shut off valve, respectively, because different agencies passed the buck back and forth without taking responsibility for resolving the issue. It is clear that there is confusion among those being paid to serve our community. That should not happen, and it would be an advantage to deal with these types of issues from within the local government apparatus.

I would also like to make sure Kent is a business-friendly town. With the increasing burden on small businesses related to rising labor costs in Washington State, I would like to make sure that Kent uses every option at our disposal to provide financial incentives to make it easier to do business here.

DM:  Kent residents will be glad to hear about your approach to this position.  What other ways do you plan on interacting with the community to make sure their voices are heard and you are able to represent them?

PA:  Being a resident of Kent and being involved in various activities and organizations around town, I certainly have my ‘ear to the ground’. I’m always listening to the people around me to see what they’re talking about. The other day, as my wife & I were eating lunch, the manager of the restaurant was discussing with us the challenge their chain will face in Seattle when the minimum wage goes up to $15. He was concerned they may have to lay off some of their staff because of the increase in labor costs. When those types of issues come up in Kent, I want to make sure that both the voice of the workers and the business owners are heard before we make decisions on policy.

Other than that, I plan to visit organizations and events that represent the multiple interest groups in the community. That would include events and organizations that have an interest in education, parks, transportation, infrastructure, business and public service such as police and fire. In my opinion, being a representative at any level of government is a proactive endeavor. Residents of Kent are busy making this a special place to live, work and play. They don’t need to add any more to their plate by feeling the need to come see me. I should be willing to go where they are to see how they’re faring in this great city we all love. Of course, my door will always be open to those I serve.

DM:  Excellent news for those in Kent to know you will be there for them and their concerns.  What plans do you have for your campaign trail that volunteers or donors would be interested in hearing about?  What are your media links for readers to follow you on?

DM:  That's excellent news, Mr. Addis.  In closing, what final thoughts would you like to leave with readers and potential voters of Kent, for Paul Addis as City Councilman?

PA:  I’d just like to say that I don’t see this as a competition of good vs bad choices. I’m sure every candidate in this race wants to serve the city of Kent with good intentions. As long as there are average citizens who are willing to step up and volunteer for local positions, Kent will be just fine. I applaud my opponents, and may the best person win.

As for me, if elected, I will do my best to serve with integrity, honesty and transparency. I will always lean toward less taxation, more choices, maximum use of technology, less regulation and continuous improvement in processes while utilizing my experience and skills to make that happen. I promise to be a good steward of the revenues generated by the hard working people of Kent.

President Authorizes Relocation and Internment of Citizens for "National Security"

WASHINGTON, DC - The President has released the following executive order, which allows the relocation and internment of any resident of the United States, including citizens, which may be considered a risk to national security, and authorizes the usage of Federal troops to perform such relocation and internment.

Whereas the successful prosecution of the war requires every possible protection against espionage and against sabotage to national-defense material, national-defense premises, and national-defense utilities as defined in Section 4, Act of April 20, 1918, 40 Stat. 533, as amended by the Act of November 30, 1940, 54 Stat. 1220, and the Act of August 21, 1941, 55 Stat. 655 (U.S.C., Title 50, Sec. 104);
Now, therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States, and Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of War, and the Military Commanders whom he may from time to time designate, whenever he or any designated Commander deems such action necessary or desirable, to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any person to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion. The Secretary of War is hereby authorized to provide for residents of any such area who are excluded therefrom, such transportation, food, shelter, and other accommodations as may be necessary, in the judgment of the Secretary of War or the said Military Commander, and until other arrangements are made, to accomplish the purpose of this order. The designation of military areas in any region or locality shall supersede designations of prohibited and restricted areas by the Attorney General under the Proclamations of December 7 and 8, 1941, and shall supersede the responsibility and authority of the Attorney General under the said Proclamations in respect of such prohibited and restricted areas.
I hereby further authorize and direct the Secretary of War and the said Military Commanders to take such other steps as he or the appropriate Military Commander may deem advisable to enforce compliance with the restrictions applicable to each Military area hereinabove authorized to be designated, including the use of Federal troops and other Federal Agencies, with authority to accept assistance of state and local agencies.
I hereby further authorize and direct all Executive Departments, independent establishments and other Federal Agencies, to assist the Secretary of War or the said Military Commanders in carrying out this Executive Order, including the furnishing of medical aid, hospitalization, food, clothing, transportation, use of land, shelter, and other supplies, equipment, utilities, facilities, and services.

The year was 1942.  The President - Franklin D. Roosevelt. FEMA didn't exist yet. FEMA camps weren't even a conspiracy theory yet. However, thousands of American citizens and legal residents were relocated and placed in internment camps across the United States. All in the name of National Security.

How quickly we forget that both parties, Democrat and Republican, have committed human rights violations.

We spend so much time arguing over immigration and religions that we lose sight of the fact that jihadists are the reaction to our actions in the middle-east. Maybe instead of trying to stop immigration, we need to stop bombing countries, stop interfering with the politics and regimes of foreign countries, and worry about taking care of our own problems here at home. In 2016 alone the US dropped over 26,000 bombs, and at the same time approximately twenty veterans committed suicide each day, and there were over 500,000 homeless in the United States.

Don't let politics divide us. Work together in your communities to fix our problems, locally and nationally. And if the time comes, stand up for each other. Give a voice for those who have no voice.

Come together as one people. Spread love, not hate.

WBAL-11 Baltimore Publishes Misleading Photo of Inauguration Turnout

BALTIMORE, MD - WBAL-11 TV continued the trend today of fake news by mainstream media by publishing a misleading photo of the 2017 inauguration of Donald Trump.

In the WBAL article, the TV station claimed that Trump's inauguration was "much smaller" than Obama's, and included a photo which was most likely taken in the early setup stages of the inauguration.

According to Heavy.com, the Trump inauguration was most likely approximately 900,000, which is indeed about half of the attendance at Obama's first inauguration. However, the Heavy.com photos show a much larger crowd than the photo by WBAL, filling the entire mall.

An interesting note by Heavy.com, however, is that only 800,000 attended Bill Clinton's first inauguration, and only 300,000 attended George Bush's inauguration in 2001.

Is it any wonder that Americans are losing faith in news media?

According to a September 2016 Gallup poll, only 32% of Americans have a high amount of trust in news media. This is an all-time low, and definitely hasn't been helped by recent events.

Trump Protestors on Inauguration Day, I can not Stand with You by David Malekar

Normally, I would completely support protesting Big Government and the Militarized Police State. Sadly, I can not tomorrow.

I could continue this list for hours, but I want to get this piece out tonight rather than next week.

I am closing this with a video of the Seattle Anti-Trump Protest I attended on November 13, 2016, a few days after Trump had been elected by the Electoral College.

LCI Exclusive: Seattle Anti-Trump Protest Rally 11.13.2016

 

I wanted to give coverage of the protestors to show that they were not violent, that they were just out there to express concern. I was dressed in a black suit and tie, with my press credentials showing clearly I was with the Press and was there to cover the event; I had no political attire or affiliations on or with me. I was the only journalist to cover the event from start to finish, walking with these folks for miles in the rain. I had contracted Walking Pneumonia that I had to fight for over 2 months to recover from. As you can see, I had gone into this giving it everything I have as I always do when covering something, almost 4 hours worth of video coverage. At the very end of the protest, I spoke on a bullhorn to the crowd that had dwindled down from 400+ to about 30 people.

I wish I could say the experience was overall a great one, but it was not. I was attacked from nearly the start by random folks, yelling in my face and attacking me in crowds. I posed no threat and was there to help these people get exposure. I was a man of the Press and I was seen as the enemy. You don't have to just take my word for it, feel free to watch the video. A journalist shouldn't have to defend themselves for covering a live event in a public place. I was doing them a favor by being there and giving them uncut, uncensored coverage. What did I get in return? The Walking Pneumonia for 2 months that I had mentioned and looked down upon like I was subhuman. This Piscataway Native that they claim to stand up for, put me down. I never experienced such bigotry in my life until moving to Seattle.

So I can not stand with you, Protestors; you have made me your enemy without even realizing I was trying to cover you in a positive light. I waited months before finally writing and officially publishing this video in an article because of how disappointed i was at them. We wanted to stand with you, people of the "left;" but you chose to stand against us.

MLK Day Special: Civil Rights issues and the Libertarian Party with Logan Fleckenstein

DM:  It's a pleasure to have you back at the LCI for another round of questions. Today is Martin Luther King Day and I wanted to discuss with you some pressing civil rights issues we are facing in the Libertarian Party, today.

What happened to the widespread talk about the Militarized Police State from Libertarians as a whole? They were very vocal about it during the Bush administration but slowly faded into a halt after "Black Lives Matter" emerged.

LF:  That's an excellent question. Honestly I've wondered the same thing myself. I think some of it has to do with the fact that many libertarians have been increasing hostile to anything that might even have the possibility of being SJW related. Of course this isn't to say police militarization is exclusively a social justice issue nor to say the hostility towards SJWs isn't for understandable reasons. I think topical issues get so ingrained into media that legitimate issues can get lost in all the information being blasted at us.

I will say as a side note many left leaning libertarians (and right leaning) I personally know care deeply about this issue.


DM:  We have seen the number of LEO caused civilian deaths increasing during Obama's administration vs Bush. How do you propose we break the ice on this issue that is more out of control than ever? Again, Libertarians as a whole have become cold to the topic.

LF:  Well one hope I have with the Trump administration is that the anti-war movement in general will be sparked back to life again. Maybe if  President-elect Donald Trump is overall less hawkish than both Presidents Obama and Bush he will manage to get re elected. This is good in some potential short term reduction in hawkish policy. Also important is this inspires libertarian-Republicans and anti war progressives to join forces on foreign policy issues. If Trump doesn't reduce LEO caused civilian deaths this potential libertarian-go/anti-war progressive coalition will fight him on it. Also I don't see how someone already so disliked would be re elected.


DM:  Do you believe the Libertarian Party as a whole understands how much ground it has/potentially has lost with those individuals who live in those secluded areas where local police corruption runs wild? Cities like Chicago, Baltimore or even states as a whole like California and Maryland?

LF:  No I really don't think many do. I think there is a bit of an awakening since the exposure of some of the white nationalism going on in the alt right.  Many Libertarians have a semantics problem.

Here's what they think.
>Identity politics = swj
>Any issue that involves any sort of identity is automatically identity politics
> civil rights is a dated issue and now only used as sjw propaganda for big government

The problem is that while SJWs rely on identity politics this doesn't mean all identity issues are illegitimate. Just because Timmy cries wolf too many times doesn't mean there isn't a wolf when Susan says there is one.

If a majority of Libertarians understood the potential they were losing with these urban folks they would be out there trying to connect with them. Libertarians need to realize that people in these areas are a prime example of the results of (leftist) authoritarianism.


DM:  Why do you suspect the subject of the largest police backing organization, the Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) seems to avoid criticism despite being one of the large financial backings for Law Enforcement court fees, etc.?

LF:  Honestly this is something that's puzzled me for a bit. If I had to guess I would assume it is because people working for the F. O. P know how to make sure the organization can avoid criticism. The political game is a nasty one and if you know how to play it you can have a lot of success at the expense of others. The way to beat them is to understand their tactics and counter them.


DM:  There has been improvement with police body cams, but there have been some "technical difficulties" where devices "are off," etc. Do you believe that police body cams that can not be turned off or have their memory card remover once an officer's shift starts, will further reduce abuse from all parties involved?

LF:  On paper I can see how that would work. I think it is certainly something that should be tried if feasible. Obviously avoiding "technical difficulties" as much as possible is ideal.


DM:  If you could amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, what would you change, if anything?

LF:  Yes, I want the Civil Rights act to focus on how government (or any business that gets government money for whatever reason) treats people and leave private businesses alone. Clearly the Civil Rights act hasn't solved many serious civil rights issues the government itself is involved in. I think by focusing where the civil rights applies it can become more effective.


DM:  Mr. Fleckenstein, thank you for taking the time today to address a lot of different questions regarding civil rights on Martin Luther King Day. What closing thought would you like to add in regards to the future of Libertarian action for Civil Rights?

LF:  Thank you for having me Mr. Malekar. Libertarianism is a perfect fit for the Civil rights movement. Libertarians not trying to build a bridge with that movement is wasting an opportunity to address many different issues like the war on drugs and militarized police, to name a few.

The Libertarian Party warns U.S. senators to quickly reject the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions for the position of attorney general.
“Jeff Sessions is preposterously unfit for the highest law-enforcement position in the land,” said Nicholas Sarwark, chair of the Libertarian National Committee. “For one, he’s an unyielding Drug Warrior in a war that the U.S. government is losing and in which lawmakers need to surrender to common sense.”
Sessions is among a dying breed of Nancy Reagan-inspired “tough on drugs” lawmakers who deny the truths about drug prohibition that are now obvious to most Americans:

• Marijuana is a relatively mild drug with far fewer harmful effects than alcohol.
• Labeled, quality-controlled marijuana products are far safer than unlabeled, untested black-market drugs.
• Drug warfare drives up crime which endangers Americans and terrorizes the people of supplier countries, such as Mexico.
• The demand for drugs remains unabated under prohibition. One-third of Americans have used marijuana, and despite strict penalties against narcotics, heroin use is an epidemic that now kills more Americans every year than do automobiles and homicide, combined.

As a grassroots movement to legalize marijuana sweeps the country, Sessions wants to enforce federal prohibition laws in the eight states that have legalized recreational marijuana.
“Sessions is terrible when it comes to civil liberties,” notes Sarwark. “He wants a bigger U.S. government spy apparatus that snoops on Americans’ e-mails. He wants police officers to continue to steal Americans’ stuff through civil asset forfeiture. He advocates for discrimination based on religious beliefs, in violation of the Constitution.
“Sessions is also a war hawk, and there’s a high risk that he would be Trump’s lap dog for justifying torture by the U.S. military, as did Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for the Bush administration.”
Libertarians enjoy growing support from millennials, who are claiming a larger block of the American vote and who are helping more and more Libertarian candidates beat the margin of victory in top-ticket races. Libertarian Joe Miller for U.S. Senate in Alaska won 29 percent of the vote in the November election, coming in second, ahead of the Democrat.
“We’ll be running Libertarians for U.S. Senate in upcoming elections,” Sarwark warned. “There will be a price to pay for any senator who confirms Sessions for attorney general.”
Americans cast almost 20 million votes for Libertarian candidates in the 2016 general election. The Libertarian presidential candidate, Gov. Gary Johnson, appeared on the ballot in all fifty states, plus the District of Columbia.
